My mouth dropped open. What a coincidence! First he ended up being beside me in lab, and now he’s in my tutorial!? I watched Johnny look around and spotted me, his face lighting up. “Hey Lina, I didn’t know you were in this tutorial too!” he said, taking the other empty spot beside me. “You never told me! Who’s the stalker now?” I said, smiling. “You two know each other?” Scott asked, raising his eyebrows slightly. “Oh yes, we’re beside each other in lab”, I explained. “Scott this is Johnny, and Johnny, this is Scott.” Both guys nodded at each other. Ok, awkward. The teaching assistant started talking at that moment and I was spared, once again, from talking. “So Lina, may I have your number? It’s to ask for Chem help if I need it. I suck at Chem and you seem to understand what the TA was talking about”, Scott asked when class was over. “Uh, sure!” I said, and gave him my number. “Great! I’ll text you when I need help then. Thanks a lot!” Scott flashed another smile and nodded at Johnny as he walked away. I looked at Johnny with a bewildered face and he just laughed.
“Your first midterm will be in a week. It will cover all the material we’ve been working on since the first day of class. This midterm will count for 15% of your final mark, and there will be another midterm in a couple of weeks. Start studying early!” the prof announced, ending the lecture. “What a great way to end the weekend”, I groaned. “No kidding, I feel like I’m screwed”, Johnny said. “That’s why you should take notes!” I exclaimed, swatting him with my notebook. We’d become to be friends after that day in the lab. It was already the third week of classes and I no longer resented him. He was actually a pretty nice guy once you get to know him. “Anyways, I’m off to my next class, see you later!” I waved. “Catch ya later!” he waved back. I walked quickly to my other class, thinking how nice he’d become these past few weeks. There had been lots of flirting, not like it meant anything though. I’ve had a few crushes in high school and even had a boyfriend, but it wasn’t anything serious. He lacked commitment and I dumped him because I realized I wanted someone who would be serious about dating. It was fun and all, but I wanted to find someone who was more mature.
My next class was Psychology, and so far, it was a pretty interesting course that challenged my mind. I’ve learned a lot about why we do and act certain ways, and I’ve double thought a lot of events I’ve had in my life. “Alright everyone, settle down”, my Psychology prof said, over the voices of 400 people. “I will be delivering a pretty interesting lecture today, I’m sure all of you will pay attention during the whole hour. The topic today is on relationships!” Everyone in the room sat up straight, myself included. “We will be learning about different types of relationships such as family, friends, and of course, boyfriend/girlfriend ones. To make things more interesting for you, we will be starting with boyfriend/girlfriend relationships. We will also be covering the concept of love later on in this course”, my prof announced. I took out my notebook and pen and focused my whole attention on him. “How many of you are still dating your high school sweetheart?” my prof asked, smiling. A few hands, maybe around 20, went up slowly. “You’ve all heard the saying ‘High school relationships never last’, right? Well that’s because once you hit college or university, you start to mature into an adult and meet other people whom you share the same interests in, be it same major, same classes, etc. According to statistics, a good number of you will find your potential soul mate during your time in college or university. For those of you who are still dating your high school sweetheart, most of them will not last. It is very very rare for high school sweethearts to last through post-secondary and get married, but it does happen”, my prof said. “Did you end up with your high school sweetheart?” a voice in the room called out. I laughed along with the whole room. “Funny you should ask that, whoever it was. It just so happens that I did marry my high school sweetheart. We have two amazing children as well”, my prof chuckled, fingering his wedding ring. “Awwwwww”, the whole class said. “Haha, anyways, back to our lecture!” the prof waved his hand, smiling. Aw, that’s so sweet! If what he said was true, then I hope to find my soul mate during my years at this university. I hope I find him soon! I smiled to myself.
