Chapter 4

“Hey…you look familiar”, he said. Ah, shoot! “You’re the girl who dropped her pen in Chem lecture right? And then turned into a tomato? Oh man, that was priceless!” he laughed. “Excuse me? A tomato?” I glared. “Haha, yeah! You should’ve seen yourself! Everyone was staring at you, I swear!” he laughed again. Turning red with anger, I stepped away from him and moved as far away as the lab bench could go. “Whoa, I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to make you mad, but you gotta admit, it was pretty funny”, he smiled and went back to work. Seething, I scribbled my answers on the data sheet. How dare he insult me! He doesn’t even know me. What a mistake, I should’ve never asked him for help! Finishing my sheet, I handed it to my teaching assistant and walk past the dude and out the door without a backwards glance.

The next day, I stumbled into my Chem lecture, late again. Groaning as I noticed the full lecture hall, I made my way down to my area of death: the front row. I sat down and pulled out my notebook and pens. The prof walked in a moment later and I instantly focused my attention on her. During the first few minutes of class, I tentatively took notes, when suddenly, a disturbance shifted my concentration. The guy sat down in the desk next to me again.

Oh my gosh, doesn’t he know that everyone’s looking at him now? Why is he late again?! And why is he sitting beside me again? Ugh! Pretending I didn’t notice him, I went back to taking notes. To my surprise, he didn’t even talk to me during the whole lecture. “Tutorials will be starting next week, make sure you attend every single one because they count for attendance marks”, my prof said, concluding the lecture for the day. “Do you ever take notes?” I asked as I was packing up, my curiosity getting the better of me. “Na, I’m smart enough. Only people who have a lot of time on their hands and have nothing better to do take notes”, he mocked. I was speechless. What was wrong with him? Does he have to shoot down every single thing that I say? Angry, once again, I stormed out of the lecture hall.

I met with Ginny a few hours later, still mad and fuming. “Hey, what’s up?” Ginny asked, when she saw me. “Nothing, just realized how rude some people in university can be”, I replied. “Aww, what happened?” she asked. I told her the story of the guy and how he insulted me in lab the other day and what he said today. “Hmm…maybe he was saying those things ‘cause he likes you!” Ginny smiled mischievously. “Uh, no! I don’t even know him! That’s gross!” I screamed. “Sure, sure”, Ginny laughed. “Oh, come on Ginz, I’ve only said like what, two sentences to him? We’re like strangers!” I retorted. “Mhmmmm”, Ginny was still smiling. “Ok, anyways, did you see that guy today?” I asked, changing the subject. “Ohhh, yes! Oh my gosh, he is sooooo cute!” Ginny squealed. I covered my ears. “He was sitting diagonally across from me today, his face is amazing!” she gushed. “His face? Um, ok then…” I rolled my eyes. The bus came soon after, and we boarded it, Ginny still mesmerizing about the guy.
